The Way Things Go aka Der Lauf der Dinge is a kinetic art piece displayed in a 16 mm film more so than it is an art film. There have been many things like it over the years but I would argue that most of the media that seems like it is inspired by it is more like a cousin to Der Lauf der Dinge and many people may not even know about the film, and were actually inspired by Rube Goldberg machines in children’s media prior to 1987. Rube Goldberg made comic diagrams […]

I grew up around more 20th and 19th century art and design influences than I realize now that I am thinking back on my early life. My mom had a keen eye for antique furniture and collectibles, costume jewelry and rare early plastics like Bakelite and Lucite jewelry, art deco and many other style fads from the past. My mom passed away after a 4-year cancer battle in 2019 and I have inherited many of her estate’s unique wonders. For years she managed an Art & Antiques shop in Quilcene. I have fond memories (and dreadfully bored child memories) of frequent trips to antique stores, flea markets, and garage sales. I believe this exposure to mid-century modern and other styles helped shape the things I was drawn to in film when I became a movie aficionado, and to this day. The director that first comes to mind that helps best portray this blend of bright and fantastic components of the past and today and blends my love of contemporary pop culture cheesiness with the beautiful aesthetics you would not expect to go together in film, is Baz Luhrmann. I have not seen all his films, but I highly recommend exploring his bright, unique, bizarre opulent aesthetic as best stands out to me in these films: Romeo + Juliet (1994), Moulin Rouge! (1998), Australia (2008), and The Great Gatsby (2013). The imagery is not just fantastic for its own sake, it also is an image system that helps convey classic human emotion moments to draw each story forward and I value that as a lover of film and storytelling.
